Tattoo Aftercare
Proper aftercare is essential for the healing and longevity of your new tattoo. Follow these instructions carefully to ensure the best results.
Initial Care (First 24 Hours)
After your tattoo session, I will apply a thin layer of ointment and cover your tattoo with a protective bandage.
- Leave the bandage on for a minimum of 3 hours
- If using Tegaderm or Saniderm, you may keep it on for 3-4 days
- After removing the bandage, gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and antibacterial soap
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel (avoid using cloth towels that may harbor bacteria)
Daily Cleaning (Weeks 1-2)
Wash your tattoo 3 times per day:
- Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo
- Gently clean the tattoo with lukewarm water and unscented antibacterial soap
- Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean paper towel
- Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer or tattoo-specific aftercare product
- Let your skin breathe - don't over-moisturize
What to Avoid
- ✗ Don't pick or scratch - Let scabs fall off naturally
- ✗ No swimming or soaking - Avoid pools, hot tubs, baths, and ocean water for 2-4 weeks
- ✗ Avoid direct sunlight - Keep your tattoo covered or out of the sun until fully healed
- ✗ No petroleum-based products - Avoid Vaseline, Neosporin, or petroleum jelly as they can clog pores
- ✗ Skip fragranced products - Use only unscented soaps and moisturizers
- ✗ No tight clothing - Wear loose, breathable clothing over your tattoo
Healing Timeline
Days 1-6: Initial Healing
Your tattoo will feel tender and may appear red or swollen. This is normal.
Days 7-14: Peeling Stage
Your tattoo will begin to peel like a sunburn. Do not pick at the peeling skin.
Weeks 2-4: Surface Healing
The surface of your tattoo should be healed, but continue gentle care.
Months 3-6: Complete Healing
Full healing occurs beneath the surface. Your tattoo should now be fully settled.
Long-Term Care
Once healed, protect your investment:
- Always apply sunscreen (SPF 30+) to your tattoo when exposed to sunlight
- Keep your skin moisturized to maintain vibrant colors
- Stay hydrated and maintain healthy skin
- Consider touch-ups every few years to keep your tattoo looking fresh
When to Seek Medical Attention
Contact a doctor if you experience:
- Excessive redness, swelling, or warmth around the tattoo
- Pus or unusual drainage
- Fever or chills
- Red streaks spreading from the tattoo
- Severe pain that worsens instead of improves
